Average related to Speed

If a person travels three equal distances at a speed of x km/hr, y km/hr and z km/hr.

Then average speed during the whole journey is given by

3xyz / (xy + yz + zx).

If a certain distance is travelled at x km/hr and an equal distance (say the return trip) is travelled at y km/hr then average speed during the whole journey is

2xy / (x + y).
